This region and in particular the Hondon Valley has some fantastic walks. You can walk amongst a landscape that offers mountains, rivers, forests, archaeological sites, ramblas and even a desert.
Having hiked and biked over 20,000km in the last two years I’ve seen quite a bit of the area and choosing a favourite walk is difficult; my favourite mountain is the emblematic Pena Mina (Sleeping Lady 1053m) but my all-round favourite walk has to be the Rio Chicamo.
The Rio Chicamo is an example of the cliché, “A hidden gem”. It emerges from an aquifer near Hondon de los Frailes. Formed millions of years ago you walk in a prehistoric landscape with outstanding geology, vegetation and a near extinct species of fish. The Chicamo’s water has been used for centuries for irrigation and you can follow its path to Mahoya. Whatever your fitness or ability, it’s a must see.
